Unlike many of the other games in our list Hi-Rez Studio’s third person action multiplayer game SMITE doesn’t create life but pits you against other mythological gods and figures. SMITE lets you fight it out in a battle royale between two teams of 5 players with the purpose of destroying the base of the enemy. Released in 2002 as a spin-off from the original Age of Empires series of games this real-time strategy adventure was hugely successful both critically and financially for the developers Ensemble Studios and publishers Microsoft Game Studios. The story involved elements of Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology and featured a host of legendary gods and monsters. It was your job to strategise everything from your armies to the gathering of resources. Players were also able to “call upon the gods” to help them along the way. An extended edition was released on Steam for Windows just last year.
